There are, of course, the Pater Noster of 1926 and the Credo of 1932, but the only really sizable work in an explicitly religious vein that appeared before the Mass of 1947 is the famous Symphony of Psalms for chorus and orchestra that Stravinsky composed in 1930, to fulfill a commission offered to the composer by Serge Koussevitzky during the final days of 1929.

The Symphony in C is a work by Russian expatriate composer Igor Stravinsky. The Symphony was written between 1938 and 1940 on a commission from American philanthropist Mrs. Robert Woods Bliss. It was a turbulent period of the composer's life, marked by illness and deaths in his immediate family.
An outstanding Symphony of Psalms, a work which evidently meant a great deal to Karajan, accompanied by fine performances of the Symphony in C and the String Concerto. My only reason for not giving the full 5-stars is the lack of warmth in the recordings of the latter two works, but these are still fine performances by any standard.
